Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
