Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
