Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
