Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official said the attack made him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
